kiwis on route 66
We all lined up at 7am at Du Page fairgrounds for the 7am departure or 1st gear. Toothpicks worked great, holding back the eyelids. The cop driving the armoured car was like a 2yr old with a new train set. We had three jobs day one, M151 was a nonstarter, would not run right, another Jeep water pump didn't play nice, Jeep three spun no.1 Conrod bearing. We whipped its pants off but it was terminal AND it was a brand new engine. The bloke and his 13 yr old son were gutted. The convoy rolled into Pontiac Illinois like a rocket sled on rails. There was a full mayoral reception with untold doughnuts (we hate doughnuts) we did a town tour of the Rt66 Museum and the Pontiac Car Museum then there was a full blown outdoor dinner party with a band and song show which was magnificent. We lacked enthusiasm for tent building so slept in the Main Street of Pontiac under the trailer. Combined report compilation by Peter and Paul
